Hazel Johnson Whitehurst, age 95 of Smithfield claimed the promise of the Resurrection on Monday, June 19, 2017. She was born to Charles Gattis Johnson and Lucy Corinna Benson Johnson on December 23, 1921. She was preceded in death by her parents; her devoted husbands, Cecil B. Whitehurst and Jim Roberts; and her sisters, Viola J. Baker, Verda J. Phillips, Pauline J. Wilkins, and Cleo J. Williams. She graduated from Four Oaks High School, attended Corinth United Methodist Church in Four Oaks through high school and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield throughout her adult life. She was a member of Choir for a number of years and actively participated in the Women of the Church programs, The Joy Group, Wednesday Lunch Bunch and loved Sunday School Class. She was and incredible wife, mother, and grandmother and always found time for others. Hazel lived a full and wonderful life and enjoyed camping with family and friends, spending time with family, cooking and serving others, gardening, volunteering at Johnston Memorial Hospital, and participating in the Women’s Auxiliary for the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department. Hazel is survived by two loving sons, Curtis B. Whitehurst (Paulette) of Raleigh and David K. Whitehurst (Ann) of Mechanicsville, VA, and one step-son, Jim Roberts (Susan) of Chapel Hill, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a number of nephews, nieces, and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, 215 S. Third St., Smithfield, NC. The family will receive friends at the church from 11 AM til 12 Noon, immediately prior to the service. Burial will follow at Corinth United Methodist Church Cemetery in Four Oaks.
The family wishes to thank Community Hospice, the nurses and staff at Brookdale Assisted Living in Smithfield and the nurses and staff of Carillon Assisted Living in Fuquay. The family especially wants to thank Dr. Koffer and the nurses and staff at the SECU Hospice House of Smithfield who cared for her during her recent illness. In lieu of flowers, expressions of love and remembrances can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Smithfield or the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC.
