Smithfield – Hazel Pearl Phillips Whitley, age 96, died late Sunday evening, June 25, 2017 in Smithfield Manor in Smithfield. Born April 27, 1921 in Johnston County she was a daughter of the late Raeford and Alice Garner Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Earl Whitley; and brothers, Junior Phillips and Carmon Phillips. Hazel was a member of North Smithfield Baptist Church. Hazel loved helping and cooking for people. She always was willing to lend a helping hand to someone in need or baking a special treat for someone she loved.
Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be conducted at 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning in Branch Chapel FWB Church Cemetery.
Surviving are her daughters, Faye Rose of Smithfield, Teresa Strickland and husband Joe of Idaho, and Barbara Woodard and husband Harold of Princeton; brothers, Herman Phillips, and Carl Phillips; five grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren.
