    Obituary

Herbert H. Sanders, fondly known as “Knee Baby”, was born in Johnston County on March 4, 1929 to the late Walter and Florence Avery Sanders. He was proceeded in death by his siblings, Susie Brown, Lovie Sanders, Jessie Bradley, Fannie Sanders, Clyda Sanders, Roosevelt Sanders, Lee Sanders, Warren Sanders, Walter Sanders, Elmer Sanders, Rudolph Sanders, Robie Sanders, Waston Sanders, and a set of Twins. Herbert departed this life on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Smithfield Manor Nursing and Rehab Home in Smithfield, North Carolina.

Herbert grew up and lived in Smithfield most of his life. He attended Johnston County Training School. At a very young age, Herbert joined the U.S. Army. Once learning how young he was, Herbert was requested to return home to his mother.

Herbert joined Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church under the leadership of Rev. Melvin Graham. Herbert was also a member of the Smithfield Progressive Men’s Club and
    the American Legion Post 270.

Herbert was employed at Ready Mix Concrete for many years. He was later employed as a chauffeur for KR Edwards Tobacco Company until his retirement. Finding it unrewarding to remain fully retired, Herbert became employed by Carroll Pharmacy as their delivery person, until he lost his eyesight.

Herbert is survived by: his wife, Mary Barnes Sanders; his son, Rickie Sanders of Hampton Virginia; two grandchildren, Rickie Sanders, II (Dana) of Laurel, Maryland and Dionne Sanders of Landover Hills, Maryland; two great-great grandchildren, Jaden M. Sanders and Milan J. Sanders; one aunt, Sallie Allen of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, five sisters-in-laws, and friends.

    Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me,
And may there be no moaning, at the bar,
When I put out to Sea.
