James Lloyd Gurley, age 93, of Smithfield passed away on September 28, 2018. Born in Johnston County on February 22, 1925, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Corinna Creech Gurley. He was also preceded in death by a son, James Lloyd Gurley, Jr.; and siblings Carl Gurley, Charles Gurley and Doris Holloman. Mr. Gurley served in the US Army during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart for wounds he received in Germany. He was a member of the Pine Leve American Legion and was a member and Deacon at Stevens Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, October 3 at 2:30 PM in the Creech Cemetery on Creech Mill Road, Smithfield. The family will receive friends at Parrish Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1-2 PM.
Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Thompson Gurley; son Russell Gurley and wife Tina of Smithfield; daughter Trudy Rains and husband Al of Smithfield; sister Margaret Barnes of Pittsboro; five grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
