Jessie Lenwood “Linwood” Thompson, formerly of Chester, SC, passed away at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem on February 19th, 2018, aged 89. He was born in 1928 to the late Sidney Floyd Thompson and Ila Braswell Thompson, and raised in Johnston County farm country, near Princeton, NC. He joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in the Western United States and West Germany He served in Taegu, South Korea during the Korean War, with the Reconnaissance Tactical Squadron. With the GI Bill he obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University, and began a career with Duke Power Company, now Duke Energy. He spent the majority of his time with the company managing the local Duke Power branch in Chester, SC, from 1965 until his retirement in 1988. He was a leader in the Chester County community, having served as the President of the Rotary International, The Sertoma Club and the Toastmasters, he was a founding member of The Chester Little Theater, and an active member of both the Moose Lodge and the Bethel United Methodist Church. In retirement he volunteered with the American Red Cross Blood Services and as a tax return preparer with AARP. He enjoyed the American West, country music, woodworking, square dancing with the Chester County Circling Squares Square Dance Club, visiting the Smoky Mountains, writing short fiction, and visits from his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Lola Peedin Thompson, and all of his siblings: brothers, William Alton Thompson, Richard Lewis Thompson, Clarence Albert Thompson, Rexford Lee Thompson, Sidney Floyd Thompson Jr., Troy Ezra Thompson, Larry Edison Thompson, and sisters, Gladys Thompson Hood and Marjorie Grace Thompson Adams.
A funeral service, with US Air Force honors, will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in the Hills of the Neuse Memory Gardens.
He is survived by his daughter Amy Thompson Heestand and her husband Daryl of Winston-Salem, son Bruce Thompson and his wife Younju of Atlanta, GA, four grandchildren, John Heestand, Paul Heestand, Carys Thompson and Gareth Thompson, sisters-in-law, Ann Thompson, Doris Peedin, Hazel Peedin and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
