Smithfield – Joanne Katherine Webber Sutherland age 89, died Tuesday evening at Barbour Court in Smithfield. She was born January 28th 1929 to the late Harry Moore Webber and Elizabeth Amelia Frei in Roanoke, VA. Mrs. Sutherland had a passion for genealogy research, loved Emerald Isle North Carolina and painting. Her pastimes included crossword puzzles, playing cards and she loved Dr. Peppers and ballpark hotdogs. She was known for her quick wit and spunky attitude, which she held onto through her last days.
Joanne was preceded in death by her husband Mahlon Barnhart Sutherland and is survived by daughters India Higgins and husband Danny of Smithfield, Lisa Ann Sutherland Pingram of Knightdale, Kelly Brown of Pinehurst, grandchildren Kimberly, Michael, Zachary, Joshua, and Hannah, as well as great grandchildren Zoye, Chuck, Ryder, Madison, Cael, and Sage.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 10, at 11:00 am in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 10-11 AM. Her final resting place will be in Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke, VA.
Mrs. Sutherland’s request was that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Virginia Historical Society in her memory. She will be greatly missed by friends and family.
