KENLY – Johnnie Calvin Godwin, age 74, died Friday morning at his home. He was born September 17, 1943 in Johnston County to the late Rev. Perry Meredith and Sarah Mildred Hodge Godwin. Calvin was a US Army veteran serving mostly in Germany as an artillery surveyor and was a member of Selma American Legion Post 141. He worked with CP&L in the Tax Division and later worked with the NCDOC as an Administrative Accountant, until his retirement. Lovingly known by friends and family in the community as “Johnnie Appleseed” he enjoyed growing apples and even won a Blue Ribbon at the NC State Fair. Calvin was an active member of Riverside Baptist Church where he served as the Chairman of the Deacon Board.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2018 in Riverside Church. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Godwin Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. just prior to the service.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Patricia Otto Godwin; son, John Chadwick “Chad” Godwin and his wife Sonya of Lillington; brothers, Denny M. Godwin and wife Janice of Garner, Ted G. Godwin and wife Donna of Selma and David Godwin and wife Wendy of Lucama; sisters, Janice Godwin Padgett of Pine Level and Susan D. Godwin of Kenly and three granddaughters, Elizabeth Godwin, Catherine Godwin and Madison Godwin.
