Julian Fussell Marshall

    Julian Fussell Marshall, 89, passed away on August 15, 2019.

    Julian was born on June 18, 1930 in Rose Hill, NC the youngest son of Herbert Charles Marshall, Sr. and Lucy May Fussell Marshall. He graduated from North Carolina State University and after graduation he served his country in the US Army and the US Army Reserves attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

    His long career began in 1955 at family-owned Smithfield Lumber Company where he started in timber procurement before moving into the role of president and general manager. After the sale of Smithfield Lumber Company to Union Camp Corporation in 1975, Julian served as plant manager for Union Camp before forming Marshall and Associates, the real estate firm he operated as broker until his death. As a realtor he specialized in trading timber, land acquisitions and commercial and residential sales including appraisals, consultations and courtroom witnessing. Julian was active in many professional real estate organizations and served as past president of the Johnston County Board of Realtors.

    Julian found great fulfillment in civic duty. He was a Rotarian for 64 years as a member of the Smithfield Rotary Club and most recently the Central Johnston County Rotary Club. Julian was senior active member and served as past president, vice president, and board member. He was named Paul Harris Fellow and had the honor of naming more than 10 Paul Harris Fellows during his tenure in the Rotary Club. He was active in the Tuscarora Council of the Boy Scouts of America and served as vice president of the executive committee from 1972-1973. He was the Smithfield-Selma Senior High PTA president in 1984. A life-time member of the greater Smithfield-Selma Area Chamber of Commerce, he served as past vice president and past president.

    A man of faith, Julian was a member of Centenary United Methodist church in Smithfield where he was a member of the United Methodist Men serving as past president twice, and was a member of the Administrative Board. Expressing his deep love of God gave him great joy especially as Sunday-School teacher for the Royal Builders class. Julian believed he lived a blessed life and he shared his strong faith at every opportunity.

    The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the nursing staff of UNC Hospitals in Smithfield and Chapel Hill, Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, Smithfield Manor and SECU Hospice House of Smithfield for the compassionate care and support they provided to Julian and to the family.

    Julian Fussell Marshall is survived by his wife of 37 years, Elaine Francis Marshall of the home; sons, William Corbett Marshall of Raleigh, Julian Brian Marshall of Smithfield, Brian Keith Parker of Smithfield; daughters, Dyanna Daugherty of Smithfield, Lela Heckler (Ed) of El Paso, Texas, Joni Daugherty McManaman (deceased), Karen Parker Wiggs of Clayton; brother Herbert Charles Marshall, Jr. (Ann) of Florence, Alabama; grandchildren Amber Nicole DeWolfe (Nick), Lindsay Ellen Wiggs, Brilyn Elizabeth Parker, Julia Francis Wiggs, Alec Parker Wiggs, Matthew Temple (deceased), Kelsey Bell (Shane), Kyle Dale, Jessica Butler (Clayton), Robert Heckler (Juana), Joseph McManaman, Jeremiah Schrieber; great-grandchildren Reid Hunter, Charlotte Butler, Dalton Bell; as well as 7 nephews, 4 great-nephews, 4 great-nieces, 2 great-great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Helen Cumie West. Family was absolute to Julian, he believed in an inclusive family that knew all of its people.

    A visitation will be held Monday, August 19 from 6-8:30 PM in Wesley Hall, Centenary United Methodist Church, 140 E. Market St., Smithfield, NC.

    Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 20 at 11 AM following a short visitation at 10 AM at Centenary United Methodist Church, 140 E. Market St., Smithfield, NC followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Smithfield, Rev. William Holliday officiating.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to SECU Hospice House (payable to Johnston Health Foundation) 426 Hospital Road P.O. Box 1376 Smithfield, NC 27577, to the nursing program at Johnston Community College, or to Centenary United Methodist Church.
