Smithfield – Karl Degenhardt, age 75, passed away Monday September 23, 2019 at UNC Johnston Health. Born January 1, 1944 in Union County, NJ to the late William and Edna Lemke Degenhardt. In addition to his parents, Mr. Karl is also preceded in death by a sister, Diane Wagner. No formal services are planned at this time. Mr. Karl is survived by sons, Karl H Degenhardt and wife Marsha of Paris, IL, Dennis Jeffery Degenhardt of Carmi, IL; Sisters, Arlene Holland of Clayton, Winkie Assell of Louisburg; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; Several nieces and nephews. Mr. Karl was a retired army veteran serving his country as a Command Sergeant Major. During his military service, he served in Korea and Vietnam earning a purple heart, bronze star, and several additional combat awards. He loved to tinker on things including his Ford Bronco, and enjoyed nature in general. In lieu of flowers, a memorial can be made to a charity of ones choice in Mr. Karl Degenhardts name.
