Dr. Leonard Schmick Woodall, age 88, of Smithfield passed away on September 12, 2018. Born in Smithfield on January 15, 1930, he was the son of the late Edward and Ruth Schmick Woodall. He was preceded in death by his brother Edward L. Woodall of Cleveland, OH, his adopted son, Michael Karl Woodall and his wives, Ruth Cooley Woodall and Barbara Barefoot Woodall.
A graduate of Smithfield High School, Dr. Woodall went on to earn a B.S. degree in 1952 and an M.D. degree in 1956, both from the University of North Carolina. After graduation, he was a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps stationed in Berlin, Germany. Dr. Woodall returned home and had an Ob-Gyn practice in Smithfield from 1963-2001, delivering approximately 8,000 babies in Johnston County. He served fifteen years as the Johnston County Health Director and assisted in the development of the new Health Department facilities. In January of 2017, the Johnston County Health Department dedicated the Women’s Health Clinic in his name. Dr. Woodall was a pilot and served as a member of the Johnston County Airport Authority for 28 years. He was known for being an avid UNC fan, wearing bow ties and driving a Tar Heel blue 1973 Karmann Ghia. Dr. Woodall funded a full scholarship in perpetuity at the UNC Medical School.
The family will receive friends at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma on Friday, September 21, from 6 to 8 PM. Burial services will be private.
Surviving are his son, Leonard Schmick Woodall, Jr. and wife Shelia Benton Woodall of Four Oaks; and three grandchildren, Edward Woodall attending UNC Law School in Chapel Hill, Allison Woodall attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL and James Woodall attending East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.
