Lyda Denise Bales passed away peacefully on the evening of September 25, 2017. She was born Jan. 17, 1955 to Keith Robert Bales and Joyce Langley Bales in Smithfield, NC, where she lived her whole life, and was a member of Selma Baptist Church. She graduated from UNCG and worked in her husband’s photography studio. Later, she got her LPN and cared for individuals in their homes. Throughout her life, Denise was a sweet, quiet person who loved her pets and her son more than anything else in this world. She once brought a stray dog from Western Carolina home to Smithfield to stay, that she and her suitemates had been feeding, and named her “Snuggles.” “Neecy”, as her friends and family called her, will be remembered for her giggle and her generous, selfless spirit.
She is predeceased by both parents and her beloved son, John Brent Godwin, Jr. She is survived by her ex-husband and companion, J. Brent Godwin, Sr., former stepdaughters Jessica Godwin Anastes(Rob) and Melissa Godwin House(Chris) and 3 precious grandchildren, as well as her brother, Ronald Keith Bales(Susan) and sister, Nanette Bales Lawing.
