Mary Hunter Corbett November 29, 1944 – July 20, 2018
Mary Hunter Corbett of Smithfield, NC, passed away on July 20, 2018. Born in Danville, VA, on November 29, 1944, Hunter graduated from Harrisonburg High School and Salem College. She shared her love of children and of learning across many years of teaching, and retired in 2004 as a first-grade teacher at South Smithfield Elementary.
Hunter brought great warmth, style and humor to everything she did and everyone she met. She particularly loved to read, visit with friends (“the girls”), and spend time with family at home and at their Neuse River cottage (her adored “Pelican Watch”).
Hunter was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Hunter Gourdon Gunn; father (who died in the 1944 invasion of Normandy, prior to her birth), Paul Emile Gourdon Jr.; and stepfather, William B. Gunn Sr.
Those who will continue to love her and each other, as she taught them so well, are her husband of 50 years, the Honorable Albert A. “Andy” Corbett Jr.; son Paul (Alicia) of Graham, NC; daughter Sarah West (Troy) of Smithfield; grandchildren Connor and Caroline West; brother William B. Gunn Jr. (Sylvia) of Kittery Point, ME; sister Courtland Meyer (John) of Harrisonburg; sister-in-law Nancy Corbett Brown of Lugoff, SC; and beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
The family will be receiving visitors Monday, July 23, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma, NC. The Reverend William Holliday will officiate a service at Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield on Tuesday, July 24, at 11 a.m., with private burial following.
In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed in Hunter’s memory to the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina Little Red Stocking Fund (PO Box 14608, Greensboro, NC 27415) or Centenary United Methodist Church (140 E. Market Street, Smithfield, NC 27577).
