Micro – Mary Wellons Martin, age 86, died Sunday, July 23, 2017 at her home. Born April 8, 1931 in Johnston County she was a daughter of the late John Turner and Gertha Jane Parker Wellons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William Royster Martin; brothers, Eugene Wellons, Egbert Wellons, and John Wellons; and sisters, Mildred Bramlett and Myrtle Godwin. Mary graduated from Micro High School in 1949 as Valedictorian of her class and was on the Micro High School basketball team that won the Johnston County Championship of 1948. She was a member of the Selma Eastern Star Chapter 209 and a Girl Scout Leader for many years. Mary was a member of Micro Original Free Will Baptist Church, but attended Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church where she was active in the church for over 50 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph Balance and Rev. Charles L. Renfrow officiating. Burial will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday in Micro Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday just prior to the service and at other times at the home of Teresa Rose, 3435 Stevens Chapel Road, Smithfield, NC, beginning Wednesday morning.
Surviving are her son, John Bryan Martin and wife Martha Matthews Martin of Raleigh; daughter, Teresa Martin Rose and husband Donnie of Smithfield; sisters, Jency Griffin and husband Daniel of Fayetteville and Leta Pillion of Greensboro; grandchildren, Rebecca Helms and husband John David of Clayton, Jennifer Townsend and husband Kristopher of Clayton, and Brenna Martin and fiancé Ryan Smith of Asheville; step grandchildren, Ryan Matthews and Caroline Matthews, both of Raleigh; and great grandchildren, Emily Townsend, Alison Townsend, Kate Townsend, Rachel Helms, and Jonah Helms.
