Smithfield – Mavie Jean Daughtry, age 84, passed away Friday July 30, 2021 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. She was born in Johnston County on March 20, 1937 to the late Percy and Ima Davis Thompson. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by husband, Person Daughtry; brother, Everette Thompson.
A funeral service will be conducted on Monday August 2, 2021 at 11 AM at Yelverton Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Smithfield. The family will receive visitors at the church on Monday from 10 AM to 11 AM. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Daughtry is survived by son, Jeff Daughtry and wife Wanda of La Grange; daughter, Gloria Holmes and husband Bobby of Smithfield; grandchildren, Melissa VanderHelm, Joy Hill, Scotty Taylor, Daniel Daughtry, Amy Daughtry-Grubbs, Jon Holmes and Elizabeth Grounds; 20 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Daughtry was a 1955 Pine Level High School graduate and also a member of Yelverton Grove Free Will Baptist Church. In the church, she was involved with the Woman’s Auxiliary and served as an officer at the church and district levels. She received the Life Time Membership award from the Cape Fear Conference. She loved God and her family and was the matriarch of the family.
Mrs. Daughtry enjoyed flowers, but her request was that memorial contributions be made to her favorite mountain retreat, Cragmont Assembly, 1233 North Fork Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
