Morton Tew “M.T.” Baggett, age 82, of Smithfield, passed away on Wednesday, January 9, at the SECU Hospice House.
Born in Johnston County on December 19, 1936, he was the son of the late Audy Morton and Nora Tew Baggett. M.T. was also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Becky Boone Baggett and an infant brother, Audy M. Baggett, Jr.
M.T. graduated from Smithfield High School and went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a member of the Marching Band. After UNC, he joined the US Army before he returned to Smithfield and helped operate the family business, Wilson Chevrolet for many years. He later joined the Johnston County Sheriff’s Department where he served as a Deputy and a Detective with Environment Enforcement.
M.T. was very active in Boy Scouts in years past, serving as Scout Master and having 22 Eagle Scouts during his years with Smithfield Troop 22. After growing up in Smithfield First Baptist Church, he became a member of Centenary United Methodist Church for the last 56 years.
The family will receive friends at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma on Monday, January 14, from 6 to 8 PM. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 15, at 3:00 PM in Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield. Private burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Surviving are his son, James Audy Baggett and wife Jill of Smithfield; daughters, Gayle Baggett Aschenbrenner of Raleigh and Jennifer Baggett Rabil of Smithfield; his brother Robert Franklin Baggett of Greensboro; and his grandchildren, Jacob, Boone and Rebecca Sasser, Caitlyn Stallings, William and Lane Baggett.
