Raeford “Ray” Earl Penny

    Benson, NC: Mr. Raeford Earl “Ray” Penny, age 74, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2020 at his residence. Graveside Funeral Service will be held 3:00PM-Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Randy Beasley will officiate.

    Ray was born on July 31, 1946 in Johnston County to the late Mary Edna and Hubert Raeford Penny. He was also preceded in death by his son, Jonathan Keith Penny and a brother, Danny Penny. Ray was a US Army Airborne Ranger who served in Vietnam. He was a Baptist preacher and a butcher who loved to make homemade sausage. Ray also installed flooring and carpet and loved to dance and watch westerns.

    Surviving include his sons, David E. Penny and wife, Jennie of Four Oaks; Alton Vann Penny and wife, Judy of Rentz, GA, and Anthony Rodger Penny of Scott, GA; grandchildren, Elizabeth Penny, Jeanette Kerlin, James Lewis, Hannah Penny, David Penny and Timothy Franks; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Carol Holton and husband, Roger of Cary, and Connie Barr and husband, Frank of South Carolina; brother, Jerry Don Penny and wife, Kelly of Knightdale; mother of his children, Judeth Dare Wilkes of Georgia; several nieces and nephews.

    The family will receive friends from 1:30PM-2:30PM, Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson, NC.

    In accordance with NC-COVID19 guidelines, the funeral home suggests practicing social distancing guidelines and the three W’s: wait, wash, and wear a face covering.

    The family wishes to thank the staff of Liberty Hospice for their loving care.
