Ret. USMC MGySgt. Sherwood Lee Allen, age 81, of Craven County died Wednesday at his residence. Funeral Service will be 3:00PM Saturday at Rose & Graham Funeral Chapel in Benson. Officiating will be Rev. Vernon Braswell. Burial will follow in the Thompson Family Cemetery outside of Smithfield.
Sherwood was born on January 7, 1936 in Johnston County to the late John Avery and Essie Della Lee Allen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jean Allen and a great grandson, Kurt M. Arthur, III. He retired from the US Marines as a Master Gunnery Sergeant.
Survivors include his children, Charlotte Allen Meeks and husband, Cecil of New Bern and Kemberly Lea Arthur and husband, Kurt of Kernersville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Glenda Woodard of Dunn and Lanie King of Virginia; many nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends 1:45PM-2:45PM Saturday at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson.
