Smithfield – Roy Maylon Stewart, age 72, died Tuesday evening, January 3, 2017 at his home. Born November 19, 1944 in Johnston County to the late Jasper Earnest and Mary Leona Evans Stewart, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby Stewart, Sherwood Stewart and Earnest Stewart and a sister, Edna Allen. Roy was well known in and around the Johnston County area for his lead guitar playing and singing. Years ago Roy and his band opened for Ray Price and Merle Haggard when they toured the area. He also played with local bands Bill Joe Austin and Doc Windley and most recently played with Harold Pope and Judge Yates Dobson. Roy was a US Army veteran serving as a Specialist 4 and Rifle Sharpshooter.
Funeral services have been cancelled and will be rescheduled.
Surviving are his wife Brenda Hayes Stewart; son, Roy Stewart, Jr and wife Kelly of Princeton; daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Briggs and husband Phillip of Benson; brother, Ervin Stewart and wife Wanda of Raleigh; sisters, Eloise Stephenson and Shirley Parrish both of Smithfield and Barbara West and husband Tommy of Wake Forest and five grandchildren, Seth Merson, Lexi Stewart, Laney Stewart, Karli Stewart and Layla Stewart.
Visitation and service are to be scheduled.
