Zebulon – Shurwood Keith Spicer, age 79, died Thursday, June 13, 2019 in Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh. Born September 18, 1939 in Johnston County he was a son of the late Willie Thomas and Pearl Hester Spicer. He was preceded in death by his daughters, Beebe J. Spicer and Teresa J. Spicer; brothers, Durwood Spicer (his twin brother,) Gordon Spicer, and Paul Spicer; and sister, Ella Frances Caudle. Shurwood attended Heritage Baptist Church in Zebulon. He loved his church family and loved the Lord.
Shurwood was a loving and hardworking man. He grew up on a farm in Selma where his family were sharecroppers. From then on, he loved being outside, growing vegetables, and landscaping. After high school, where he played football, he was offered scholarships to East Carolina, UNC Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest. He decided to decline the scholarships to stay close to home to take care of his mother. He was an avid sports fan. He loved the Carolina Panthers and the Washington Redskins. NC State was his college team. For about 40 years, he drove an 18-wheeler for the A&P food company. He and his truck covered every place east of the Mississippi. He retired twenty years ago and has enjoyed gardening, landscaping, and logging. Shurwood had a gregarious, larger than life presence. His infectious laughter and hilarious stories could make anyone bust at the seams. A few of his last words to his family were, that he always worked hard, enjoyed himself, loved his family and friends, and believed that others should “live and be happy.” One of his biggest gifts was to make people feel better through his stories, shenanigans, and laughter.
