William “Bill” N. Royall

    SMITHFIELD – William (Bill) Norwood Royall, 94, passed away Thursday, August 8, 2019 at the SECU Hospice House. Born in Johnston County December 1, 1924 to the late Joseph N Royall & Erma Creech Royall. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Christine D. Royall.

    Bill grew up farming in the Brogden community until joining the US Army in 1944. He served during WWII in the 9th Infantry Division. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After serving our country he returned to Johnston County. Soon after his return, he worked with his father in the family restaurants, Cafe Royall & Cafe Neal, both located on Third Street in Smithfield. In 1960 he went to work for the State of NC in the Dept. of Federal Surplus Property Division. He retired as the Assist Director in 1987. Bill was a member and past Commander of VFW Post 5886. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Smithfield for many years.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church. Entombment, with military honors, will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

    Bill is survived by his daughter, Erma Jo Dodd of North Myrtle Beach, SC, a grandson, Jeff Caldwell & wife Sarah and their son, Grant Caldwell all of Smithfield.

    In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church, 202 South 4th Street, Smithfield, NC 27577 or the SECU Hospice House, P. O. Box 1376, Smithfield, NC 27577.
