William Joseph “Joe” Smith

    Clayton – William Joseph “Joe” Smith, age 75, died Monday evening at his home. Born October 11, 1942 in Johnston County to the late James Woodrow Wilson Smith and Rosa Marie Parrish Smith, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Harold Smith and a sister, Shirley Smith Bullock. Joe attended the North Smithfield Baptist Church and was an active member of the Republican Party in Johnston County. In 2013 Joe was honored as the Johnston County Republican Party Volunteer of the Year. He served for many years as a Judge and Chief Judge for the Johnston County Board of Elections, something that his granddaughter is continuing now as a Judge. Joe and his brother in-law Bobby Britt owned and operated Neuse Custom Woodcraft near Micro, until they decided to sell out and retire. He was an avid reader and enjoyed doing puzzles, especially the Sudoku Master puzzles. He always had a smile and a joke and was a shining light for all who knew him.
    A memorial service, with military honors, will be conducted at 2:00pm Friday, September the 28th at North Smithfield Baptist Church, 19 Dail St. Smithfield, NC 27577
    Surviving are his wife, Linda Britt Smith; daughters, Kim Smith Castleberry and husband Tony of Kenly and Angie Smith Colvin and husband Darren of Roanoke, VA; brother, Larry Glenn Smith and wife Linda of Clayton; sisters, Sandra Smith Provenzano of Clayton, Teresa Smith Scott and husband Jesse both of Clayton and Sister in law Judy Fowler Smith of Indiana. He was known as “JoJo’ to grandchildren, Toby Castleberry of Kenly, Kelly Castleberry of Clayton and boyfriend Eric Denning of Four Oaks.
    As well as numerous nieces and nephews.
    The family will receive friends Thursday evening, September 27th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at their home at 2125 Glen Laurel Rd, Clayton, NC 27527.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Smithfield Baptist Church, 19 Dail Street, Smithfield, NC 27577.
