An off-duty deputy sheriff and a suspect were both injured during a confrontation at a Johnston County business on Saturday.
The off-duty Johnston County deputy was inside Barefoot’s Country Store on US 701 south of Four Oaks when he saw an individual engaged in suspicious activity with his cell phone, according to Detective Lt. Mike Carson with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy confronted the suspect and identified himself as a law enforcement officer. He asked the individual to step outside. While outside the store the suspect assaulted the deputy but with the help of a concerned citizen, the deputy was able to subdue the individual.
Deputies arrived on the scene moments later and took the individual into custody. The suspect, who was not named, was taken to Wake Medical Center where he was treated and released. The deputy sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
Detective Carson said the incident remains under investigation. No other injuries were reported.
