Office Building Will Be Converted Into Apartments

After winning approval from the Smithfield Town Council, a West Smithfield office building will be converted to an apartment complex.

H. Harper Whitley owns the office building located on a 0.42 acre lot near the intersection of Fairway Drive and Stancil Street, just off West Market Street.  The town approved plans for Suburban Apartments which will convert six office units in the 4,200 square foot buildings to six apartments.

The Smithfield Planning Board voted on June 1st to approve a conditional use permit needed to operate the multi-family housing complex.  The item was on the July town council agenda but was postponed until the August town board meeting at the applicants request.

No one spoke in opposition of the apartment complex. The town council unanimously approved the request.

Mayor Andy Moore recused himself from the discussion because Whitley is his father-in-law.
