A police officer was injured during the arrest of a shoplifting suspect. It happened Sunday night in Smithfield.
Around 8:30pm, Smithfield Police were called to the BP convenience store on South Third Street at Brogden Road after someone entered the business and reportedly fled on foot without paying for a 12 pack of Bud Light beer. Responding officers spotted the suspect nearby, who took off running after seeing police.
Officers located the suspect on Mill Street. During a struggle to arrest the suspect one officer was injured.
Kaltau Kamon Brown, 42, of Glenn Street, Smithfield was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, larceny and habitual larceny.
Police Captain R. Sheppard said Brown had multiple prior convictions for misdemeanor larceny which resulted in the habitual larceny charge.
Police did recover the stolen beer.
Brown was taken to jail where he was held under a $50,000 bond.
