A Smithfield police officer has been promoted.
Nathan Memmelaar was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant recently. He was given his new oath by Smithfield Mayor Andy Moore during the June 6th meeting of the Smithfield Town Council.
Lt. Memmelaar has been employed with the Smithfield Police Department since February 2004. He has served as a Sergeant since 2006.
“I am excited to see the police department promote qualified officers from within the agency,” Police Chief Keith Powell told WTSB News. “Lt. Memmelaar has worked his way up the career ladder and will do an outstanding job as a Lieutenant.”
Prior to joining the Smithfield police force 12 years ago, Memmelaar worked with the Mount Olive Police Department where was a K-9 Officer, General Investigator and Narcotics Investigator.
Memmelaar is a resident of Smithfield. When he isn’t on duty he can be found hunting and fishing as well as spending time with his wife and two grown children. JoCoReport.com Photo
