Officials: Ignore Suspicious Toll And Court Payment Texts Hitting Cell Phones
RALEIGH, N.C. — Residents across Wake, Johnston and nearby counties are receiving fraudulent text messages claiming they owe money for overdue tolls or traffic violations, officials warn.
The messages often appear to come from a local court, such as the Wake County District Court, and claim the recipient must pay a fine or appear in court to avoid additional penalties. Authorities say these messages are scams.
Officials caution that scammers can be highly convincing. Messages may include a recipient’s name and address, reference real judges or law enforcement officers, and mention familiar local locations to appear legitimate.
However, any unsolicited message demanding immediate payment or sensitive personal information is a red flag.
Court officials and local sheriff’s offices emphasize they do not contact individuals by text message to request:
Social Security numbers
Credit or debit card information
Payments via prepaid cards or money transfers
Any other sensitive financial details
Residents who receive these messages should delete them immediately and avoid clicking any links or scanning QR codes included in the text.
Authorities encourage residents to remain cautious and report suspected scams to help prevent others from becoming victims.
