SMITHFIELD – A 15 year-old learning how to drive with her father ended up crashing their family car into a sign in Downtown Smithfield. Police said the crash happened at 6:45pm Monday at the intersection of N. Fourth and Market Street.
Police said the driver had a learners permit and was with her dad. The teen told police she was attempting to make a left turn but made the turn later than she anticipated. She drove the 2015 Nissan passenger car over the curb, onto the sidewalk and didn’t stop until striking a sign in front of the law firm of Daughtry, Woodard, Lawrence & Starling at 405 E. Market Street. Police said the young driver may have been distracted by an approaching motorcycle traveling on Market Street.
No injuries were reported.
Damage to the car was placed at $4,000 and damage to the sign approximately $12,000.
The driver’s father, who was riding in the right front passenger seat, was cited for an unsafe movement violation.
