Their family has exhibited livestock at the NC State Fair since 1976, first with Duroc hogs and later with Angus cattle. The couple were inducted into the NC State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame in 2001. Today, the family operates a commercial swine farm and continues to breed Angus cattle. Their annual production sale is an ongoing community event offering bulls and females to commercial cattlemen and other breeders of Angus cattle. Their seven grandchildren remain highly active in exhibiting livestock.
The Johnston County Youth Livestock Show and Sale is an annual event open to youth aged 5-18 who are either enrolled in Johnston County Schools or whose primary residence is in Johnston County. Participants learn about livestock production, record keeping, financial management and responsibility through the project.
