The Highway Patrol is investigating an accident involving one of their state troopers. It happened around 3:45 PM Thursday on an unopened section of the US 70 East Bypass, east of Wayne Memorial Drive, outside of Goldsboro.
Trooper Reggie Edwards was responding to a report of a person walking along Hood Swamp Road pointing a weapon. Due to the nature of the call Lt. Jeff Gordon, NC State Highway Patrol Public Information Officer, said Trooper Edwards traveled on the unopened roadway “in an attempt to intercept the person quicker.”
As the trooper approached the Hare Road overpass he encountered a Barnhill Company contract worker operating a New Holland farm tractor with a front broom sweeper. As the trooper approached the tractor the two vehicles collided.
Both the trooper and the tractor operator, Jimmy Reid, 53, of Tarboro, were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.
Lt. Gordon said Friday the accident investigation was still continuing. Photos by John Payne
