KENLY – A pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 95 near Kenly. The accident happened around 9:30pm Friday.
A Fayetteville couple and their special needs daughter had been traveling southbound when they stopped momentarily on the shoulder, near the 110 mile marker, in Wilson County.
After coming to a stop, the 22 year-old woman ran from the car, crossed the southbound lanes, and disappeared into the dark median.
The family immediately began searching for their missing daughter. After being unsuccessful at finding her, the family contacted the State Highway Patrol for assistance.
Before law enforcement could arrive at the scene, the young woman, who was standing in the left northbound lane of the interstate, was fatally struck by a Jeep near the 107.5 mile marker in Johnston County.
The driver of the Jeep, Brandon Justin Klumpp, age 45, of Callahan, Florida stopped and remained at the scene. Klumpp was later charged with driving while impaired and having an open container. He was not charged with the death of the pedestrian.
A commercial motor vehicle with a dash camera traveling behind the Jeep stopped and provide video of the collision to investigating officers.
The victim’s mother was not involved in the accident but was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
Traffic was detoured off I-95 onto US 301 for approximately two hours until the scene could be cleared. The Kenly Fire Department and Kenly Police assisted with the traffic detour.
The State Highway Patrol is continuing their investigation.
How did that 22 yr. old walk 2.5 miles before being struck on the Interstate? What time length occurred for this walk?
