SMITHFIELD – Smithfield Police and the State Highway Patrol are investigating a fatal hit and run accident. It happened at 9:05pm Thursday in the 400 block of West Market Street (US 70 West) near Highway 210.
The pedestrian died at the scene. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family.
Investigators are searching for a dark color Volkswagen Jetta with front end damage. The vehicle fled from the accident scene.
Police closed both westbound lanes on Market Street during the investigation.
