Pedestrian Killed After Being Struck By Vehicle

BENSON — A 70-year-old man was killed Monday night after being struck by a vehicle along NC 50 South in the Meadow community, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash occurred around 9:37 p.m. A green Ford Explorer traveling south on NC 50 hit a pedestrian who was in the roadway directing traffic near his vehicle that had become stuck in a ditch on the shoulder.

The deceased pedestrian was identified as Thomas Brown, 70, of New York, New York.
The driver of the Explorer was identified as Brandon Massengill, 19, of Benson. He was not injured.

Brown had been helping direct traffic after another motorist stopped to offer assistance to pull his car out of the ditch.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
