Phony Home Repairmen Scam Elderly Woman

An 85 year-old South Smithfield woman is the latest victim of a home repair scam. Smithfield Police say they are still trying to determine how much money the elderly woman lost in the scam.

It reportedly happened just before Thanksgiving. It was reported to officers last Friday.

Police said the elderly woman was approached by at least three different individuals who said her home needed repairs and they could do the work.  Officials said the work was likely not needed and what they promised to repair was never fixed.

Captain R. Sheppard said the suspects would take hammers and beat on the roof, crawl space and even in the attic trying to fool the elderly woman into thinking they were actually performing repairs.

Detectives are working with the victims bank to determine exactly how much money the elderly woman lost in the scam.  Captain Sheppard said police have developed leads in the investigation this week but at last report no arrests had been made.
