Police Cite Driver Who Struck Probation Office Building

SMITHFIELD – Police cited a teenager driver who struck the front of the Probation and Parole Office building at 869-B Berkshire Road in Smithfield with his SUV, Thursday morning.

Smithfield Police said the 17 year-old driver, from Kenly, was pulling into a parking space in front of the office when he pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal, causing his 2002 Cadillac SUV to collide with the building.

The driver, and a 16 year-old passenger, were evaluated at the scene by EMS but did not report any injuries and declined transport to the hospital. No one inside the building was injured.

The teen was cited by Officer J.E. Davis for an unsafe movement violation.

Johnston County Building Inspections responded and evaluated the structural damage. The office was allowed to remain open.

Damage to the building was estimated at $10,000.
