Police: Death Of 9 Month-Old Not Suspicious

Smithfield Police said Tuesday the death of a 9 month old infant is not suspicious.

Emergency workers were called to a home in the 500 block of South Fifth Street around 7:20pm Sunday. Efforts to revive the young baby were not successful and the baby girl was pronounced dead at Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield.

Police Captain R.K. Powell said a family member placed the child in a crib to sleep around 6:00pm Sunday. When they went to check on the infant about 7:20pm, she was not breathing.

Police said the death remains under investigation but is in no way suspicious.
