Police: Elderly Driver Crashes SUV After Falling Asleep

An 80 year-old woman was injured after her car ran off the roadway and struck a gas pump in front of a convenience store early Friday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the 4:37 a.m. single vehicle accident on US 701 at NC 96 near Four Oaks.

Four Oaks Police said Jane Woodson of Lynchburg, VA was traveling southbound on US 701 when she apparently fell asleep behind the wheel. Her 2017 Nissan SUV ran off the left side of the roadway, struck the median then a total of 6 road signs before striking a gas pump in front of the Valero convenience store.

Woodson sustained non-life threatening injuries in the accident. She was transported by Four Oaks EMS to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield.

Police said Woodson traveled more than 500 feet after leaving the roadway. Officers also said speed played a contributing factor. Police said the elderly driver admitted to falling asleep.

Damage to the Nissan was estimated at $10,000. Damage to the fuel pump was placed at $500.
No charges were filed by investigating Officer K.W. Jones.
