BENSON – Police have released the name of a woman struck and killed near her home Wednesday night on Highway 50 at Benson-Hardee Road. The accident was reported around 8:30pm.
Benson Police said the victim, Catherine Renee Hayes, of JJ Drive in Benson, was apparently walking in the roadway when she was struck and killed by a vehicle. Hayes was about a half-mile away from her home.
Police said Hayes was struck by a 2021 Cadillac Escalade operated by Amber Holland of Benson. Holland was traveling north on Highway 50 when she struck Hayes, who was in the northbound travel lane. Holland immediately stopped, remained at the scene, and fully cooperated with investigating officers.
Benson Police have determined it is likely weather conditions at the time — patchy fog — and the victim’s dark clothing contributed to the accident. Investigators are continuing to gather information, but thus far, there is no indication that excessive speed was involved.
On Thursday morning, the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office was consulted and based on the known facts, no charges are anticipated.
