Police: Impaired Driver Charged With Hit And Run

SMITHFIELD – A motorist is facing several charges following a hit and run accident in Smithfield.

Police responded to a two car collision on North Street at N. Brightleaf Boulevard around 5:36pm Monday, October 14.

Officers said a Goldsboro woman had stopped for a red light at the intersection when her 2010 Toyota was struck from behind. The vehicle that struck her, a 2011 Hyundai, fled from the scene southbound on Brightleaf Boulevard.

While police were investigating the hit and run accident, officers received a separate report of a possible impaired driver, which turned out to be the hit and run vehicle.

Police said they located the hit and run vehicle, and conducted a traffic stop, as the driver was arriving at his residence on North Fourth Street.

Washington Fernando Segovia Sanango, 47, of Smithfield was charged with driving while impaired, hit and run, and driving on a revoked license. According to a police report, Sanango registered 0.24 on the Breathalyzer, three times above the legal limit of 0.08.

No injuries were reported in the accident.
