Police Investigate Shooting On Interstate 95

Smithfield Police are investigating a shooting on Interstate 95.

According to investigators, around 8:00pm Wednesday two vehicles were traveling southbound on the I-95 near Highway 70 exchanging gunfire.  Officers were already in the area on another call, heard the gunshots, and immediately responded.   Police found one of the vehicles, a pickup truck, on the southbound exit ramp riddled with several bullet holes.

The driver of the truck, 31 year-old Tirom Toler of Four Oaks, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. Toler was later released on a $25,000 unsecured bond.  The passenger in the pickup fled on foot. A police K-9 was brought to the scene but could not locate the passenger.

Police said the second vehicle involved in the shooting did not stop.  It doesn’t appear any other vehicles were hit by the gunfire exchanged between the two vehicles.

The incident remains under investigation.   No injuries were reported.

The Selma Police Department, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and NC Highway Patrol responded and assisted.
