SMITHFIELD – One person was injured in a hit and run accident in the Smithfield city limits. It happened around 11:55am Sunday, on US 301 South (S. Brightleaf Boulevard) near E. Stevens Street.
Police said a black four door Chevrolet Silverado was traveling northbound when the unknown driver suddenly slammed on the brakes.
A 2013 Honda SUV traveling behind the pickup could not stop in time and collided with the right rear bumper of the truck.
After the collision the Honda pulled into a nearby parking lot, however the driver of the pickup failed to stop.
A passenger in the Honda, a 41 year-old Mount Olive woman, sustained minor injuries but declined transport to the hospital. Two others in the Honda, including an infant, were not injured.
Police are working to identify the driver of the pickup.
