Police Searching For Attempted Carjacking Suspect

Selma Police are asking for help identifying a man wanted for the attempted carjacking of a couple in a convenience store parking lot. It happened around 4:35pm on Jan. 31st at The New Dixie Mart at 433 Highway 70 Business next to Interstate 95.

A Ford pickup was backing out of a parking space when the suspect ran up to the driver’s side, opened the door and at knifepoint yelled, “I need your f**king truck!”  The driver grabbed the suspects hand and was able to gain control of the knife.  The suspect ran away and jumped into the driver’s seat of a nearby blue hatchback style passenger car, possibly a Ford or Mazda with a Virginia license plate with the letters VYT or BYT.   The vehicle was last seen on US70 headed towards I-95.

Police Detective J. Bass said he has been working with Virginia DMV in an attempt to identify the vehicle but so far hasn’t had any success.

Police hope someone will recognize a photo of the suspect taken just prior to the incident when he entered the convenience store.  The suspect is described as a white male with blonde hair wearing glasses, a black t-shirt, blue jeans and brown shoes.

The victims, a 49 year-old male driver and 50 year-old female passenger in the Ford truck were not harmed.

Anyone with information about the suspect or vehicle is asked to contact Detective Bass at the Selma Police Department at 919-965-8189. Callers can remain anonymous.
