Police: Shoplifter Maces Children’s Store Employee

An employee at a Smithfield children’s store was pepper sprayed by a shoplifting suspect.

It happened Monday night at The Children’s Place at 1025 Outlet Center Drive.

Around 6:20pm, an employee saw the suspect enter the business and shoplift merchandise, Police Chief Keith Powell told WTSB News.  The employee attempted to stop the shoplifter before they left the store, however the suspect pulled out a can of mace, sprayed the employee in the face, then fled with the stolen merchandise.  The 27 year-old female employee was not injured.

Chief Powell said the business is still tallying the total number of items that were stolen.  The case remains under investigation by Smithfield Police.
