CLAYTON – The Highway 42 East widening project in Johnston County will require a detour for part of the Neuse River Parkway beginning next week.
The parkway is scheduled close at 7 a.m. on Monday, May 4th between Highway 42 and East School Road. Signs will send drivers along a half-mile detour, taking them on East School Road, which intersects the other two roads.
The road is scheduled to reopen by Monday, May 25th weather-permitting.
The closure will allow an N.C. Department of Transportation contractor to do necessary tie-in pavement at the intersection of Highway 42 and Neuse River Parkway. This intersection is using a new traffic signal temporarily set up on wooded poles, which will be replaced with metal poles and mast arms as part of the project.
Work to widen 4.6 miles of Highway 42 East of Clayton began in 2018, after the NCDOT awarded a $58.7 million contract.
The overall project is expected to be completed and open to traffic by the fall of 2022.
