Questions Surround Closure Of Wilber’s Barbecue

A Goldsboro landmark closed this week. There are many questions about what caused Wilber’s Barbecue located at 4172 US Highway 70 East to suddenly shut down.

A sign is posted on the door from the NC Department of Revenue (NCDOR).

According to a spokesperson for the NCDOR, the agency took action at the business.   “Due to the NC taxpayer secrecy law, we are unable to provide details beyond what is on the posted sign: “Pursuant to NC G.S. 105-242(a)(2) the personal property here within has been seized for nonpayment of taxes,” according to an email.

Under state law, the Department of Revenue has the power to seize a business for nonpayment of taxes as a last resort after all other voluntary and forced tax collection measures have failed.

Wilber’s opened in 1962 and is known for their pit-cooked barbecue, hushpuppies and other dinners.  Its remains unknown if the closure is temporary or permanent.
