The 25th anniversary of Relay for Life was held on Saturday at SSS High School around the track at Charles Tucker Stadium.
During the opening ceremonies, Pat Penny recognized various individuals who had been active in Relay for Life over the past 25 years. Many people were recognized, including Jackie Parrish, who has been the highest individual fundraiser for many years in a row. Jackie, who is in her 90’s and just recently celebrated a birthday, was in attendance with her team “Jackie and Friends” as they sold White Swan BBQ trays at the event.
Also recognized for many years of participation were Jim Best, Barbara Thornton, and Phyllis Thornton, among others.
As a part of the opening ceremonies, cancer survivors and their caregivers were invited to open the event with the first lap around the track. Spectators applauded the survivors as they walked the lap.
The Relay for Life event was scheduled to take place from 10:00am-10:00pm on Saturday but rain interrupted the event, causing it to end around 7:00pm.
