Renowned American Hero And Purple Heart Recipient To Speak At Clayton Veterans Recognition Ceremony

CLAYTON – The Town of Clayton will honor our nation’s heroes with a special Veterans Recognition Ceremony at The Clayton Center, located at 111 E Second St., on Monday, November 4 at 5:00 p.m. This event also marks the launch of Operation Green Light, a week-long tribute to veterans running from November 4-11.

Army Staff Sergeant Charles Eggleston (Retired)

This year’s guest speaker is American Hero Army Staff Sergeant Charles Eggleston (Retired), a Purple Heart recipient and Bronze Star Medal honoree. Eggleston’s service and bravery are remarkable. He joined the U.S. Army in 1992 and deployed to Iraq multiple times. During his third deployment in 2005, Eggleston was critically injured by an improvised explosive device (IED), sustaining severe injuries that required more than 70 surgeries. Despite these challenges, Eggleston has become a passionate advocate for veterans, speaking out about their care and continuing to support them in his civilian life. His story of resilience and service makes him an inspiring voice for this important occasion.

This year’s ceremony will include the Presentation of Colors by the American Legion Post 71, the National Anthem performed by Tempest Watkins, an Amazing Grace bagpipe performance by Joe Brady of the Wake & District Piper Band, and a Drill Exhibition by Clayton High School’s Navy JROTC.

In conjunction with its upcoming ceremony, the Town of Clayton is launching Operation Green Light, an initiative dedicated to supporting and honoring veterans. From November 4 through November 11, residents and businesses across Clayton are encouraged to display green lights as a symbol of appreciation for the service and sacrifices of veterans.

While supplies last, free green light bulbs will be available for pickup at Clayton Town Hall, located at 111 E. Second St. Each family or business can receive one bulb.

The Town invites everyone to participate in Operation Green Light, helping illuminate the community in solidarity with those who have served. This unified display of gratitude aims to let veterans know they are seen, valued, and supported.
