A Clayton man was allegedly caught in the act of breaking into his neighbor’s car. The neighbor and a friend detained the suspect until deputies arrived on the scene.
It happened around 2:30 AM Sunday. The victim was at her home in the 200 block of Ocean Drive in the Sunset Ridge subdivision off Sonny Road in the Cleveland community. She walked outside to retrieve an item from her vehicle and reportedly saw a man inside her car. The victim went back inside to summon a second person. They returned and confronted the man in the car. The suspect reportedly crawled underneath the victim’s car momentarily as if to hide, then tried to flee on foot. The witnesses tackled the suspect in a ditch and held him until deputies arrived.
Jesse Ray Daughtry, 34, of 311 Ocean Drive, Clayton was charged with felony breaking and entering a motor vehicle and misdemeanor larceny.
$139 in cash was allegedly stolen from the victim’s car. The money was recovered and returned.
Daughtry was confined in the Johnston County Jail under a $10,000 bond.
