Recently retired Chamber of Commerce President Rick Childrey of Smithfield was honored by the Smithfield Town Council last week. Mayor Andy Moore read a Proclamation in honor of Childrey’s dedicated service before presenting him with the plaque.

Moore said Childrey worked constantly to better the local economy, cultural and aesthetic development and used his vision to preserve history by relocating and renovating the Yelvington-Lee House for the Chamber of Commerce Office where it now stands. He was also recognized for implementing a number of new programs including Leadership Johnston County and the Flame For Learning Award in Johnston County Schools.

“It has been a wonderful career for me,” Childrey said after accepting the honor. “I think the future is bright. I do hope the Towns of Smithfield, Selma and the Chamber will work together to make this a great place to live.”

Childrey received a standing ovation from the audience.
