Retiring Wayne County Assistant Superintendent to be Honored

Goldsboro – Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) Assistant Superintendent for Support Services/Athletics Dean Sauls will be honored on Thursday, June 14th with a floating reception for his service to the district and to North Carolina public education over the past 41-1/2 years.

“Although Mr. Sauls has spent months trying to retire without any fanfare, we could not allow him to slip away without recognizing him collectively for all that he has done for this school district during his tenure,” states Dr. Michael Dunsmore, superintendent. “As a key member of my administrative cabinet, I have appreciated his dedication and commitment to helping advance the departments within his area to better support students, staff and the education environment within our schools.”

Mr. Sauls began his teaching career at Central Academic School in Raleigh in 1976. The following year, the Eureka native returned to Wayne County as a teacher at Norwayne Junior High. Since then, he has taught and served as athletic director at Charles B. Aycock High School; worked as WCPS Director of Secondary Education, Health/Physical Education, Social Studies, and Drivers Eligibility; and served as principal of Rosewood High.

In January 2015, Mr. Sauls transitioned from school administration to the Superintendent’s Cabinet as Acting Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction/Athletics. Later that year, he was named Assistant Superintendent for Support Services/Athletics.

In addition to a master’s degree in school administration from East Carolina University, Mr. Sauls holds a bachelor’s degree in history education. He is certified in secondary English, math and social studies, as well as middle grades language arts, reading, math and social studies. His certification also includes elementary education.

“Mr. Sauls is an avid historian and the resident go-to guy for anyone needing to know details, solicited or not, about a particular school,” adds Dr. Dunsmore. “Those within my cabinet have come to reverently refer to Mr. Sauls as ‘The Old Shoe’ for the wealth of knowledge and historical information that he has compiled about our schools and county over the course of his career. While he will be missed, we wish him the very best in his retirement.”

The floating reception will be held at the WCPS Administrative Offices on Royall Avenue from 2:00 PM until 5:30 PM. Mr. Sauls’ last official day with the district will be June 30.
