On Friday afternoon May 22nd, more than 30 Junior ROTC Cadets from Smithfield-Selma High School assisted American Legion Post 141 by placing approximately 600 flags on the graves of those who served in the defense of their nation.

SSS senior Keith Williams played taps on his bugle at the beginning of the ceremony.

Post Commander and SSS Physics teacher Mark Peterson told those assembled for the solemn event, “Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors men and women of the United States Armed Forces who unselfishly served our country and died serving that cause of freedom.”  He said, “Today we will honor their service by placing a flag on their grave to commemorate what they so unselfishly did for us.”

Cadets and Post members spent about an hour placing flags.  Participants placed the flag, came to attention and honored each veteran with a solemn salute.
